We live in a day and age that is vastly different from the generation that came before it. It can be argued that each generation is very different from the last, but the fact of the matter is that the gap between the current generation and the one that came before it is far larger than anything that has been seen in history. This is true for a variety of reasons, but in the context of the job economy one should understand that jobs are not nearly as secure as they used to be.
Companies can lay you off at any time, and if you are the owner of a company you should know that this is your right. After all, if your enterprise has incurred losses that mean that it cannot support a large number of employees anymore, it is understandable that these employees will be laid off for the good of the longevity of the company. However, one thing that should change is the manner in which companies lay people off. They can’t just send people to the cleaners without a second though. Instead, companies need to focus on outplacement counselling so that the people that are getting laid off will end up with a much better chance at a bright future.
The reason that some companies don’t offer outplacement is because they don’t understand the outplacement definition. It is important for business owners to understand what outplacement is and offer counselling sessions accordingly. The problem with unceremonious dismissals is that it creates a large pool of unemployed people. This does not do anyone any good, and will in fact create a ripple effect that could potentially end up creating a lot of problems for said companies in the very near future.
